Scott Lowell: I do feel the winds of change continuing to blow.

Scott Lowell became well known as Ted Schmidt in the TV-Show “Queer as Folk” especially to the gay-community all over the world. Since the last broadcast of the very last episode Ted Schmidt’s and his friends’ star didn’t fade at all. Fortunately it’s possible to watch our queer-family still on DVD.
The Queer as Folk-Convention in Cologne, Germany, in june this year, will prove that the guys are still in our mind. I was able to worm out some little secrets regarding the convention and was lucky to talk with him about the past, present and future.

PM:
6 years ago, the last episode of QaF was broadcasted on US-Television. How do straight people react towards gay-people? Is it still good or getting better or is it still difficult being gay in the USA?

Scott:
I think attitudes have changed QUITE a bit, especially since we started filming in 2000. LIke any social movement there are "one step forward, two steps back" moments but I think as the older, more prejudiced generations die off or lose power the younger generations, who have known FAR more openly gay people than their predecessors, just don't see what the big deal is and are more willing to accept. Not being gay myself I can't speak to whether it's getting better as quickly as many in the gay community would like but I do feel the winds of change continuing to blow.

PM:
How has QaF changed your life?

Scott:
QAF was a wonderfully positive experience. It made me a better heterosexual and gave me the opportunity as an actor to reach a worldwide audience in something that people actually THANK me for doing. I'm very proud of it.

PM:
Hal and Randy appeare more on stages than on TV. Are you acting more in theatres as well?

Scott:
I try to appear on stage at least once every year (usually ends up being more). LIve theatre is where I come from and I will always return home to it.

PM:
A QaF-convention is planned for June this year in cologne, germany. What do you think? Is it going to happen? What can we expect if you guys are in germany?

Scott:
It's looking EXTREMELY likely that the QAF Convention in Cologne will be happening in June 2012. I almost can't believe it. It will be the first time all nine of us will be appearing together at any event like this. I'm quite excited, as is the whole cast, to meet all our European friends. I hear people are also coming from Russia, China and all over. WOW! There will be a number of large and smaller grouped Q&A sessions, plenty of autographing and photo taking sessions, some of us will be bringing personal items (scripts, props and costume pieces) from the show to auction off I believe and there will be many other opportunities to mix and mingle with fans.

PM:
Can you imagine to do some more QaF-seasons with the same cast?

Scott:
As much as we all love each other and spend a lot of time together still in our personal lives I just don't see any more episodes of QAF being filmed. I know that disappoints fans but I don't want to give any falls hopes.

PM:
What kind of projects are you doing this year?

Scott:
Nothing definitely lined up yet but I'm waiting to hear about one theatre project for the early part of the year as well as a film. In February I'll be producing a benefit performance for StoryCorps (www.storycorps.org) on stages, hopefully, in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.

PM:
How did you spend christmas?

Scott:
Well, I'm Jewish so I usually spend Christmas going to see movies and having Chinese Food! It's a wonderful tradition.

The Queer-as-Folk-Convention on the 12. June 2012 is a must for each fan and it’s going to be real fun. We’re looking forward to a great evening with Scott, Gale, Randy, Peter, Melanie, Thea, Sharon, Robert and Hal. We all should mark this event down. We will inform you early enough about another news regarding the convention. So, let’s go to cologne! J
